Workers are demanding Tk 23,000 minimum wage

After three days of worker unrest in the readymade garment sector for a pay rise, the industrial hub of Ashulia on the outskirts of Dhaka city is calm on Wednesday.
Some factories announced a general holiday on Wednesday amid the unrest.
No agitations were reported in the Unique, Shimultala, Jamgara, Chhoytala, Narsinghapur,Nishchintapur, and Palashbari on the Baipail-Abdullahpur road and Nabinagar-Chandra Highway.
Police patrolled the key points and roads in these areas. Some anrmoured personnel carriers and water cannons were also spotted.
Workers said most of the factories put up notices declaring a holiday on Wednesday at the gates.
“The situation is good today. Many factories are open and some are closed. There’s no problem anywhere,” said Mohammad Sarwar Alam, an superintendent of Industrial Police.
The agitating workers clashed with police and attacked factories in Ashulia and Gazipur during demonstrations for Tk 23,000 minimum wage. Two workers have died in the unrest in Gazipur.
