Syed Mainul Hossain, architect of the memorial at Savar, died at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases on Monday noon.
He was 62.
“He was admitted yesterday following a heart attack. He had high blood pressure. He passed away at 2:30pm,” hospital’s director Abdullah Al-Shafi Majumder told bdnews24.com.
Hossain’s design for the National Memorial was selected, surpassing 57 others who submitted designs in the national competition held for the project’s design in June 1978.
Composed of seven isosceles triangular planes varying in size in its height and base, the memorial’s main monument, 150-feet tall, has come to be the ultimate symbol of sacrifice made during Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
