Constable Saifur tells court he wants to marry female colleague who accused him of rape

He has been sent to jail, with the next hearing for questioning scheduled for Sunday

Constable Safiur Rahman has appeared in court facing charges of raping a co-worker at the South Keraniganj Police Station barracks in Dhaka.

On Saturday, Sub-Inspector Zulfiqar Ali, the case’s investigation officer, presented him in court and applied for a five-day questioning.

As Safiur did not have a lawyer, Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Abdullah Mohammad Saleh sought to hear his statement.

The constable, who married a year ago, told the court he wished to marry the colleague who has brought charges against him.

The court contacted the plaintiff and “suggested” settling the case, and ordered Safiur into jail.

Later, Safiur claimed to have been in a relationship with the female constable and said he intended to marry her in accordance with Islamic Sharia.

In the presence of the case’s investigation officer, the court scheduled the hearing for questioning on Sunday.
