The government has approved a new initiative titled “Shishu Swarga”, or “Paradise for Children”, aimed at ensuring healthcare and rehabilitation services for those with special needs.

The decision came at a meeting on the rights, protection and services for persons with disabilities held on Wednesday afternoon at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the Secretariat.

Details were later confirmed by the PMO’s press wing.

Under the initial plan, the project will be launched in 10 Upazilas across 10 districts.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the meeting and instructed relevant ministries to strengthen protection and services for persons with disabilities.

He also called for building an inclusive society by ensuring disability-friendly infrastructure, education and healthcare facilities.

He said the dignity and capabilities of persons with special needs must be properly recognised at every level of society, and practical measures must be taken so they can actively participate in all state and social activities.

The premier said building codes must ensure accessibility in all public and private facilities, including hospitals and restaurants, with proper infrastructure and toilet facilities for persons with disabilities.

He added that doors must be designed to allow wheelchair users to enter easily.

“Electric buses to be introduced for women must also include necessary facilities for persons with special needs,” he said.

He also instructed the information ministry to carry out awareness campaigns and organise initiatives featuring persons with disabilities.

He called for inspections to ensure that disability schools across the country are functioning properly and said children with special needs should be included in the “Notun Kuri Sports” competition.
