Several hours after improvised explosives and bomb-making materials were recovered from Dhaka’s Savar, similar materials have been recovered in Bongaon Union.
The bomb-making materials were recovered from inside a pressure cooker found on a field in front of Ghora Mosque in the Goperbari area, according to Sub-Inspector Md Imran of the Bhabanipur Police Camp.
He said, “On Tuesday night, locals found a drum. Inside the drum were some clothes, a Quran and a pressure cooker wrapped in a plastic bag. The drum remained there overnight.
“On Wednesday morning, locals grew suspicious when they saw electric wire wrapped in tape on the brim of the pressure cooker. As soon as the news spread, it sparked panic in the area and a crowd of curious people gathered.”
SI Imran said when locals informed Savar Model Police Station, a team quickly arrived at the scene.
Later, law enforcing personnel surrounded the area for security reasons and moved the crowd to a safe distance.
He said, “Initially, it seems to be an IED (improvised explosive device). The Bomb Disposal Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit has been informed and asked to defuse it safely.
“Once the expert team reaches the spot, the object will be confirmed by examination. Then, measures will be taken to neutralise it.”
On Jul 31, police had recovered a “pressure cooker” bomb from a bag outside a tea shop near Khejur Bagan of Ashulia’s Charabagh.
Then, on Tuesday night, police conducted a raid on a house in the Shyampur area and said they had arrested a person along with some hand grenades and bomb-making materials.
Local residents have grown anxious following the recovery of bombs and bomb-like objects in the area.
Savar Model Police chief Saiful Alam said, “Alongside the police, other intelligence agencies have also launched investigations to find out who is leaving these objects and for what purpose.”
