An Awami League leader in Pirojpur, who once celebrated the death sentence of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi by distributing sweets, has been assaulted by locals and handed over to police.
The incident took place on Saturday at Ghosherhat Bazar in Indurkani Upazila, police said.
Md Ehsan Hiron, organising secretary of the party’s Balipara Union unit, had been in hiding since the fall of the Awami League regime in August last year.
Witnesses said locals forced him to eat sweets and then beat him before handing him over to the police.
Police later confirmed his detention and said he is implicated in multiple cases.
In 2013, Hiron had publicly celebrated the International Crimes Tribunal’s death sentence for Sayeedi, convicted of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. He distributed sweets in his locality after the verdict.
The Supreme Court later commuted the sentence to life imprisonment, which Sayeedi was serving until his death in August 2023 at the age of 83.
Sayeedi was a native of Pirojpur and had twice been elected to parliament in 1996 and 2001.
Police said Hiron would be produced before court in due course.
