A video showing a young woman tying up and beating a suspected mugger near Dhaka’s Kajla footbridge has gone viral on Facebook.
Police said that locals caught two individuals in the act of mugging, assaulted them and handed them over to law enforcement late on Sunday night.
In the clip doing the rounds on social media, the suspect is seen tied to a post as the woman strikes him with a belt. Bystanders cheer her on and pressure the suspect to confess. At one point, the man claims he was just eating khichuri, but the woman counters that she had been the one distributing khichuri in the area earlier that evening.
“The woman was returning home with her relatives after shopping around midnight when muggers attacked them near the Kajla footbridge. With the help of locals, they managed to catch two suspects,” said Jatrabari Police Station chief Faruk Ahmed.
“The suspects were then handed over to the police and sharp weapons were recovered from them,” he added.
Earlier in the day, several mob attacks on suspected thieves and muggers were reported across Dhaka. In one incident in Jatrabari's Konapara, locals beat up four people, including three siblings, on suspicion of being muggers.
Police later intervened, rescuing them and taking them to the hospital.
