Constable Md Sujan of the Armed Police Battalion, or APBn, has been taken into police custody allegedly for shooting at protesters during a demonstration in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area on Aug 5.
The APBn handed him over to the Detective Branch on Friday, after a video of him kneeling and firing at protesters went viral on social media.
The footage, which several media outlets also published, sparked widespread attention.
Shahbagh police later took Sujan into custody in connection with a murder case filed over the incident with them, said Sub-Inspector Mainul Islam Khan Pulak.
He added that the process of arresting a policeman involves certain formalities from the headquarters.
"We have submitted the application to Police Headquarters, and once all procedures are complete, Sujan will be formally arrested and produced before court," he said.
Constable Sujan was deployed at APBn-13 under Uttara East Police Station.
