Broadband users will now receive 10 Mbps internet speed for Tk 500, instead of the previous 5 Mbps, according to Md Emdadul Hoque, president of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB).
Emdadul made the announcement on Saturday during a roundtable discussion on the challenges and opportunities facing internet services, organised by the Telecom and Technology Reporters Network, Bangladesh (TRNB) at the BTRC Auditorium in Dhaka's Agargaon.
Reading from a written statement, Emdadul said that the new speed upgrade would take effect immediately.
“Starting today [Saturday], customers will get 10 Mbps instead of 5 Mbps."
He added that if the government provides some policy support, ISPAB plans to offer 20 Mbps internet speed for the same price in the near future.
“In today’s digital era, and to fully harness the future potential of internet usage, the minimum broadband speed should be at least 20 Mbps.”
To support this, he proposed resuming the licence upgrade process for ISPs that already have advanced technology and infrastructure in place.
Emdadul also recommended extending licence validity to 10 years to attract more investment. On behalf of ISPAB, he proposed allowing fixed telecom service providers (FTSPs) to share bandwidth, NTTN transmission capacity, and other active and passive infrastructure.
