Trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan has surged 20 percent in the 2024-25 fiscal year to $865 million, driven by a political thaw and stepped-up business contacts after the shift in power in August last year.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), exports to Bangladesh rose nearly 19 percent to $787 million from $661 million in the 2023-24 financial year, while imports from Bangladesh surged about 38 percent to $78 million from $56 million.

Citing SBP figures, The Nation reported that Pakistan’s exports to regional countries grew an average of 2.08 percent last fiscal year, with China remaining its largest market despite an 8.6 percent drop to $2.7 billion.

Bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan totalled about $865 million in FY2025, up from $711.7 million the year before.

Officials and traders link the boost to improved ties following the Aug 5 fall of Bangladesh’s Awami League-led government.

Under Muhammad Yunus’s interim administration, Pakistani diplomats in Dhaka held several meetings with advisors to push for stronger relations, while business delegations from both countries met multiple times to explore opportunities.

Three months after the change of power, a Pakistan-flagged cargo vessel docked at Chattogram Port for the first time from Karachi.

The National Board of Revenue says imports from Pakistan are dominated by garment raw materials, leather, clinker, fabrics, cotton, onions, and potatoes. Bangladesh mainly ships tea, ready-made garments, and raw jute to Pakistan.
