A group of students from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, or KUET, has set off for Dhaka to submit a memorandum to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. Their demands include the removal of the university's vice chancellor and pro-vice chancellor.
Around 80 to 100 students left the campus at 8:00am on Sunday, travelling to Dhaka in two buses. They were seen carrying placards with various slogans and their eyes covered with red cloth.
Before leaving, the students told reporters they no longer feel safe on campus due to a lack of security. They raised concerns about the absence of KUET guards at the gates and the free movement of outsiders on campus.
The students are personally covering the bus fare, and once they submit their memorandum to the chief advisor, they plan to return home immediately. They also made it clear that they will not return to campus until their six demands are met.
Until their demands are addressed, no academic or administrative work will be carried out on campus and all activities will be held online, they stated.
Earlier, on Saturday, the students staged a protest march to condemn the assault on their peers and demand the arrest of those responsible for the attack.
Clashes broke out on the KUET campus on Feb 18 over a demand to ban student politics from the campus. More than 50 people were injured.
Witnesses said that Chhatra Dal leaders and activists conducted a programme on the campus in the morning and a group of students launched a counter-protest calling on the institution to ban student politics.
