Two killed after college wall collapses on TCB queue in Mirpur

Several others are injured after the boundary wall collapses onto people waiting to buy subsidised goods

A college boundary wall has collapsed onto people waiting to buy subsidised Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) goods in Dhaka's Mirpur-2, killing two people and injuring six others.

The wall of Mirpur University College collapsed at around 1:30pm on Tuesday, police said.

One of the dead has been identified as Nasima Begum, a resident of Janata Housing.

The other, a man believed to be around 40, has yet to be identified.

Hafizur Rahman, chief of Mirpur Model Police Station, told bdnews24.com that the college's rear boundary wall suddenly gave way around 1:26pm.

Eight people were trapped under the debris when the wall collapsed onto those waiting in line to buy TCB products, he said.

They were rescued and taken to hospital, where doctors declared Nasima dead.

Another injured man was later pronounced dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while another woman remains in critical condition there, police said.

The officer said TCB products are sold at the site every day, drawing long queues of people seeking essential goods at subsidised prices.

Describing the incident, Hafizur said: "There was a loud bang. One of our mobile patrol teams was nearby, so we rushed to the scene. Together with local people, we removed the bricks and rescued those trapped underneath."

"All eight were taken to hospital. Doctors at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation declared Nasima Begum dead. The others are receiving treatment."

He said several people standing in line to purchase TCB products were trapped under the debris and injured. They were rescued and taken to hospital, where doctors declared Nasima dead.

Police are collecting further information on the cause of the collapse and the extent of the damage, he added.
