The emergency department of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) has been vandalised following the deaths of two labourers after soil collapse at a Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) sewerage project.
Angry workers smashed the glass entrance of the emergency unit around 8:45am on Thursday.
Police have since detained six individuals from the scene in connection with the unrest.
The disturbance follows a fatal incident at 4am near Agrabad Access Road, where two workers were killed and two others injured after being buried under falling earth.
The casualties were rushed to CMCH, where a confrontation broke out between the labourers and representatives of the project's contractor.
CMCH Director Taslim Uddin said the workers arrived at the facility following the WASA accident and became embroiled in a heated argument with the contractor’s men.
It then escalated into a scuffle, leading to the glass front of the emergency department being shattered.
Zahidul Islam, chief of Panchlaish Police Station, said six individuals have been taken into custody and are being questioned over the incident.
