BGB deployment stepped up across Bangladesh

‘BGB patrols have been reinforced across the country, including in key spots in Dhaka’, a BGB statement says

The deployment of Border Guard Bangladesh, or BGB, personnel has been strengthened across the country due to the current situation following the protests for quota reforms.

A statement issued from the BGB Headquarters on Monday said, “BGB patrols have been reinforced across the country, including in key spots in Dhaka.”

Earlier, another statement had been issued with the names and contacts of officers who are in charge in the Mirpur, National Press Club, North South University, Shilpakala Academy, Shahbagh, Nilkhet and Uttara areas.

From the start of July, students took to the streets in different parts of the country as part of a movement calling for reforms to the quota system for government jobs. In the second week of the month, violence sparked surrounding the protests. Eventually, the government imposed a curfew and deployed the army to quell the violence.

The government has claimed the BNP, Jamaat and Shibir orchestrated the violence in different parts of the country during the student protests.

Various media outlets have reported that over 200 people were killed in the violence over the past week, but the government’s count says the toll is 147.
