Describing the judiciary as the ‘main pillar of our democracy’, Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed says its strength depends on the balanced cooperation between the bench and the bar.
Addressing the lawyers who will join the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association in 2024 on Saturday, he said: “The judiciary is the cornerstone of our democracy, and its power lies in the balanced cooperation of two important pillars – the bench and the bar.”
"The association is not only a part of the judicial process but is also an equal partner in upholding the sanctity and efficacy of justice."
At the meeting held at the Supreme Court Bar Association building in Dhaka, he said: "As a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association, your role is not only limited to being a lawyer; you are the guardian of the legal profession and an important partner in the administration of the judiciary.”
“My expectation from the nation and personally is that you will act with care, professionalism, and a deep sense of responsibility so that the judiciary can fulfil its constitutional responsibilities."
Referring to steps taken after assuming his office, the chief justice stated the announcement of the roadmap he had already adopted for the reform of the judiciary, the proposal to set up a separate judiciary secretariat, and the formation of a 'Judicial Appointment Council' as part of that plan.
The Supreme Judicial Council has been formed for the removal of judges, which was with parliament earlier, he added.
