Amid the tense backdrop of his appointment, Bangladesh Bank’s new Governor Mostaqur Rahman has made his first visit to the finance minister, following preliminary discussions with senior central bank officials.
He went to Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury’s office at 3:34pm on Thursday.
Accompanied by Financial Institutions Division Secretary Nazma Mobarak, Mostaqur later held a private meeting with Khosru while Mobarak waited nearby.
Earlier, the finance minister had been in discussions with the ADB.
At 10:40am, Mostaqur arrived at Bangladesh Bank, greeted with floral bouquets by the deputy governor and officials from the governor’s office. He pulled into the premises in an Allion Series A-15.
Responding to journalists, he said: “Let me work first, then I will speak. I have just joined…”
Amid mounting rumours of a new appointment, outgoing governor Ahsan H Mansur left Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday afternoon, witnessing protests and demonstrations against him.
One of his advisors Ahsan Ullah was forced to leave the office under the staff’s reproach.
In this charged atmosphere, the government appointed Mostaqur, a garment mogul, as the new governor later that afternoon.
Although previous governors were economists, former civil servants, or academics, this is the first time a businessman has been entrusted with the central bank’s helm.
Mostaqur has experience in stock brokerage and real estate development, and was a member of BNP’s electioneering committee during the elections.
Following the mass uprising that toppled the Awami League government, an interim administration had appointed economist Mansur as governor on Aug 14, 2024, initiating banking sector reforms.
After one and a half years, his remaining term was cancelled, and he was removed by a separate notification issued by the Financial Institutions Division under the ministry.
Mostaqur, born in Dhaka in 1966 and hailing from Jampur Union in Narayanganj, is also the managing director and CEO of Hera Sweaters.
His elder brother Md Mostafizur Rahman Mamun served as senior vice-president of his hometown BNP unit.
