Police have recovered the hanging body of a Dhaka University student named Anika Meherunnesa Sahi from a house in Dhaka’s Elephant Road.
The body was found in an apartment on the eighth floor of Maksud Tower around midnight on Sunday, according to Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin of the New Market Police Station.
The 24-year-old Sahi was a fourth-year student in the Department of Disaster Management and hailed from Naogaon.
“Four students lived together in a rented flat in the building,” according to Sub-Inspector Biraj Mistry of the New Market Police Station. “One of them was not home at the time of the incident.”
“The two other students found her hanging from a ceiling fan in one room and panicked. Police went to the scene when the incident was reported by a resident of a neighbouring flat. The hanging student was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctor declared her dead.”
A male student from the Bangladesh University of Textiles has been taken in for questioning over the incident, but he has not been arrested, SI Biraj said.
The police officer said that law enforcers suspect the incident is one of “suicide” over a romantic relationship.
“I don't know the details of the incident,” he added.
“The body has been kept in the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The autopsy process is ongoing. Afterwards, the body will be handed over to her family. Preparations are underway to take legal action over the incident.”
