The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has dissolved its Dhaka North city unit committee, along with the Dhaka North units of its affiliated Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal and the Dhaka West unit of Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal.
The BNP and the two organisations announced the decisions in separate media statements around 10pm on Wednesday.
They also announced the expulsion of several leaders.
A BNP central office release said the existing 51-member Dhaka North city committee, led by convenor Md Aminul Haque and member secretary Md Mostafa Zaman, had been dissolved as directed.
A new Dhaka North city committee will be announced soon, it said.
Two BNP leaders familiar with the matter believe the committee may have been dissolved following Wednesday’s clashes during an eviction drive in Mirpur.
Another leader said the decision had been taken earlier, but recent incidents of occupation and looting in parts of the capital may have influenced the process.
After 10am on Wednesday, clashes broke out between hawkers and police and city corporation workers during a footpath eviction drive in Mirpur-10.
Three city corporation vehicles were set on fire, while police and journalists’ vehicles were vandalised. Several people were injured.
Meanwhile, BNP expelled Mofizur Rahman Mamun, president of Ward 91 under Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka North, for “immoral” and “anti-organisational” activities.
Another statement said he had been expelled from all party posts, including his primary membership.
The central office of Jatiotabadi Swecchasebak Dal also announced the expulsion of Md Akhtar Hossain Mamun, convenor, and Md Hafizur Rahman, member secretary, of its Darus Salam unit over “clear” allegations of activities “contrary to party discipline”.
