The Canadian fashion duo Matières Fécales has turned Paris’ Place de la République into an open-air runway, presenting a 99-look collection centred on immigration, marginalisation and social visibility during Paris Fashion Week.

The Spring/Summer 2027 collection, titled “Ninety Nine Percent”, has featured designs inspired by the experiences of immigrants and people living on the margins of society, according to Marie Claire. Designer Stephen Raj Bhaskaran has drawn on his own childhood in Montreal’s multicultural environment.

The collection responded to their previous “The One Percent” show, which satirised extreme wealth and privilege, by focusing on the remaining and marginalised 99 percent.

The show has been divided into three sections — Family, Tribe and Gods — combining draped tulle, leather, knitwear, punk-inspired elements and couture-style silhouettes.

Mathrubhumi has described the presentation as a political statement about who gets to be seen, with the designers using the public square rather than a conventional fashion venue to frame the collection’s themes.

The finale has seen models circle a statue in the square while carrying realistic figures representing billionaires on their backs, according to Marie Claire.

The collection has also linked its fashion statement to practical support for vulnerable communities. A portion of proceeds from sales will be donated to La Maison d’Allanah, a French organisation that provides housing for LGBTQIA+ refugees, Marie Claire reported.

The show has come as Paris hosts the Spring/Summer 2027 Fashion Week, with Matières Fécales among the early labels to present their new collection.

According to Mathrubhumi, the decision to stage the show at Place de la République has reinforced its themes of visibility and social inequality, turning the public square into part of the collection’s wider political statement.
