Six bogeys send Bangladesh golfer Siddikur near bottom in first round of Rio Olympics

Bangladeshi golfer Siddikur Rahman has begun his Rio Games campaign in a disappointing fashion as six bogeys sent him down to a joint 56th position in the first round.

He mixed two birdies with his bogeys to sit on four-over 75 on Thursday - the sixth day of the Olympics.

Having earned a first-ever direct qualification to the Olympics for Bangladesh, Siddikur did well for the first nine holes by notching pars in the first four and the first birdie in the fifth.

After another par in the next, the 31-year-old shot his first bogey in the seventh hole.

The two-time Asia Tour title winner sparked hopes of a comeback with another birdie in the eighth hole but lost his way soon, ending with five bogeys in the remaining shots.

Australia's Marcus Fraser took a three-shot first-round lead after mixing nine birdies with a single bogey for an Olympic course record eight-under 63.

He found his way into the Australian team when world number one Jason Day, 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott, Marc Leishman and Matt Jones all declined Olympic selection.

The expected celebration surrounding golf's reappearance on the Games programme fell flat after the world's four top-ranked players - Day, Americans Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth and Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy - opted out over the mosquito-borne Zika virus.
