The UEFA has turned down Real Madrid's appeal calling for the repeal of sanctions over “unsportsmanlike” post-match celebrations, beIN Sports has reported.
On Monday, the European football governing body announced that the appeal filed by the Spanish giants to overturn the disciplinary actions against Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, and Dani Ceballos for “improper conduct” has been rejected.
The incident took place in the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 match against Atlético de Madrid after Rüdiger scored the decisive penalty.
The players, including some who were not part of the matchday squad like Ceballos, celebrated near the north stand of the stadium that was deemed “unsportsmanlike” by UEFA.
The initial verdict by UEFA’s Disciplinary Committee included a 40,000 euros fine for Rüdiger, 30,000 euros for Mbappé, and 20,000 euros for Ceballos.
Rüdiger and Mbappé were also handed out a one-match suspension for both, applicable only in case of repeat offences. While Vinícius Júnior, who was also under investigation, was not penalised.
Furthermore, UEFA also fined Real Madrid for 15,000 euros after a supporter was seen making a “Nazi salute” in the stands during the quarterfinal match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
The organisation warned that Real Madrid may face a ban on away ticket sales for future UEFA competitions if any recurrence of racist behaviour by the fans is seen.
