BNP chief Khaleda Zia welcomes Chinese President Xi Jinping

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Dhaka.

"We welcome President Xi and we believe his visit will deepen relations between our country and China," Khaleda said in an emailed statement an hour after Xi landed in Dhaka.

Khaleda is scheduled to meet the Chinese president at Le Meridien hotel on the Airport road around 5pm.

"Our people believe our ties with China runs very deep," Khaleda said in a statement issued by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

"Bangladesh has immensely benefitted from Chinese development assistance since the late President Ziaur Rahman (Khaleda's husband) took the initiative to establish diplomatic ties with China," Khaleda said in the statement.

Xi Jinping landed at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 11:40am on Friday on a two day visit to Bangladesh. He was received at the airport by President Md Abdul Hamid with full state honours.
