BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has apologised to an army officer for an “untoward incident” in the past.
A meeting of retired military officers was held at the BNP Chairperson's Office in Dhaka’s Gulshan on Tuesday night.
Tarique, who joined the meeting virtually from London, mentioned an incident from the past and apologised to the former director general of Special Security Force (SSF), retired major general Syed Fatemi Ahmed Rumi.
At the end of his statement, he said: “I want to see someone here on the screen. Although it’s a personal issue and all you are here, I still want to mention it. Mr Rumi is here. He was the DG SSF during Amma’s (Khaleda Zia’s) tenure.”
Then Rumi, who was in a line of retired military officers, replied, "Yes, I am (here)."
Tarique said, “Thank you. I see you now. Mr Rumi, you should remember that once we held a procession and I walked from Old Dhaka to Amin Bazar. Amma (Khaleda Zia) was also present at the procession. The procession was very chaotic and you said something to me.”
‘‘I'm very sorry that I was a bit rude on that day. Regarding all of it, I’m very sorry. For many days, I tried to reach you. I offer my apology. I didn’t get an opportunity then, and today I have it. I’m really sorry for that.”
The retired army officers gave a big round of applause after the apology.
In response, Maj Gen (Retd) Syed Fatemi Ahmed Rumi said: “I am grateful to you. As you said - ‘Thank you very much’ - I will remember it.”
“All of you stay well, stay healthy. I solicit the cooperation of all of you.”
The meeting with retired military officers was chaired by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and conducted by former army officer retired major general Fazle Elahi Akbar.
