DUCSU, JUCSU success will influence general election, Shafiqur expects

The Jamaat chief hopes to contest 300 seats with those who back them

Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman has expressed hope that the victories of Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panels in the DUCSU and JUCSU polls will have an impact on the general election.

He shared the expectation on Saturday while delivering the inaugural address at the Majlis-e-Shura of Jamaat’s central women’s wing in Dhaka’s Moghbazar.

“With the mercy of Allah, Islami Chhatra Shibir has won in DUCSU and JUCSU. Many have been amazed by this success. This outcome, Insha Allah, will be reflected in the next general election,” Shafiqur said.

“Those who love us, those we love, with them we expect to contest in 300 constituencies in the next election,” he added.

On Sept 9, the Shibir-backed panel won most positions, including vice-president (VP) and general secretary (GS), in DUCSU.

Two days later, on Sept 11, the panel swept JUCSU, securing posts including GS.

Reflecting on the political change, Shafiqur said: “After much struggle and sacrifice, on 5th August 2024 we found a new Bangladesh. In the July–August movement, many gave their lives, some lost limbs or eyesight. Through these sacrifices, Allah granted us a great victory.”

He called on party activists to remain humble. “No one should boast or take credit in excessive enthusiasm. You must be modest, you must serve the people.”

Appealing for collective support, the Jamaat chief added: “To achieve electoral victory, I make an earnest call for all kinds of support, including financial sacrifice.”
