Former Naogaon MP Md Omar Faruk arrested in Dhaka

Four other Awami League activists have been arrested alongside him

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detectives have arrested five Awami League activists, including Md Omar Faruk Sumon, former member of parliament for the Naogaon-6 constituency.

The arrest was confirmed by a statement from the DMP Mass Media and Public Relations Division on Thursday, but the other arrestees were not immediately identified. The statement did not say which case Faruk had been arrested over.

Since the Awami League government fell on Aug 5 last year, many ministers, MPs, police officials, and influential persons with connections to the party have been arrested.

They are accused in an array of cases filed at different police stations over allegations of murder and attempt to murder surrounding the July Uprising. Faruk is now the latest to be taken into custody.

Faruk was elected to the Naogaon seat in the January 2024 election as an independent candidate.

He was arrested from the Mohammadpur area around 2:30am on Thursday.

The other suspects are former Dhaka Metropolitan North Chhatra League vice president Abu Nayeem Juber, 22, Mirpur Model Thana Ward No. 22 Chhatra League Vice President Md Tanvir Islam, 30, former Dakhinkhan Thana Awami League cultural affairs secretary and Airport Thana Awami League Religious Affairs Secretary Syed Sajjad Hossain, 57, and former Motijheel T&T Colony Jubo League vice president Md Amjad Hossain Rajon, 44.

Juber was arrested from Malibagh on Wednesday night, Tanvir from Mirpur, Sajjad from Kawla, and Amjad from Motijheel Thana’s Shapla Chattar area.
