The National Citizen Party, which is seeking to register as a new political party, has met with the chief election commissioner to discuss its party symbol.
The meeting began at the Election Commission (EC) building in Dhaka’s Agargaon around 4pm on Thursday.
A three-member NCP delegation, led by the party’s Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, came to the EC building for the meeting. CEC AMM Nasir Uddin was accompanied by EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed at the meeting.
The EC has decided to register two parties ahead of the parliamentary polls. Among them is the NCP. The process of issuing a notice to find out whether there are any objections to the party is under way.
However, even though the NCP has repeatedly demanded the Shapla electoral symbol, the EC has not agreed to it yet. The EC says the symbol cannot be allocated to the party as it is not in the EC's election code of conduct.
On Sept 30, the EC sent a letter to the NCP to select a symbol and urged them to inform them of their choice by Oct 7.
The party rejected the EC's request and demanded an amendment to the election rules to include the Shapla, water lily, symbol in the list on Oct 7. Party Convener Md Nahid Islam sent a letter expressing the hope that the Shapla, the white water lily, or the red water lily would be allocated to the NCP.
Meanwhile, the NCP delegation sat for another round of meetings with the CEC.
