Thakurgaon-1 declared vacant after Fakhrul takes office as president

A by-election in the seat will be held within 90 days, Election Commissioner Rahmanel says

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s Thakurgaon-1 constituency has been declared vacant after he assumed the office of president.

The Parliament Secretariat said in a letter to the Election Commission Secretariat on Saturday that the seat became vacant on Friday evening when Mirza Fakhrul assumed the responsibilities of the president.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said, “Since the seat has been declared vacant, we will now examine the relevant laws and rules before taking the next steps.

“A by-election will be held within 90 days.”

He added, “As local government elections are approaching, we will not take much time for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election; the poll will be organised quickly.”
