NCP leader Sarjis Alam has welcomed the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh and stressed the need for unity to build the country in the period ahead.
The NCP’s chief organiser for the northern region made the comments in a Facebook post on Thursday as Tarique prepared to return home after 17 years in exile in the United Kingdom.
The BNP has announced plans to accord Tarique a reception on Dhaka’s 300 Feet Road following his arrival.
In his post, Sarjis said: “BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is returning to Bangladesh after nearly a decade and a half. At a critical moment in the country’s political trajectory — marked by the fall of authoritarian rule, changing circumstances, and multiple political shifts — he is coming back today in an important role.”
“We welcome him to post-Uprising Bangladesh.”
Referring to the future political direction of the country, he said: “Taking into account past experiences and present realities, we expect that, prioritising Bangladesh’s national interest, we will continue to work together in unity — from the democratic struggle in Bangladesh and the fight against hegemony to the path of building the Bangladesh we aspire to see in the days ahead. Welcome.”
Tarique has lived in exile in the UK since leaving Bangladesh in 2008.
He began his journey home on Wednesday evening aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from London. The plane landed in Sylhet at 9:55am on Thursday. After a stopover, the flight is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka at 11:55am. Members of his family are travelling with him on the same flight.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and members of the party’s standing committee are expected to receive Tarique Rahman at the airport’s VIP lounge.
After completing all formalities, Tarique is due to proceed to a reception venue near the July 36 Expressway, also known as the 300 Feet Road, where he is expected to address party leaders, activists and members of the public from the stage.
Following the reception, Tarique is scheduled to visit Evercare Hospital to see his mother, BNP chief and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who has been undergoing treatment there since Nov 23.
He and his family members are expected to stay at a residence on Gulshan Avenue following the hospital visit.
