A general election should be held soon according to the people's wishes, says BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
“We are always hopeful. An interim government has been formed and we are assisting. We hope that, according to the people's wishes, an election will be held soon. The people will get their opportunity to elect their representatives through a free, fair, and impartial election.”
He made the remarks to the media after paying tribute at the Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard in Dhaka’s Mirpur at 9:30am on Saturday.
BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan and Moin Khan, Dhaka Metropolitan North convener Aminul Islam, and Dhaka Metropolitan South convener Abdus Salam also attended the event.
Fakhrul said: "Today is Martyred Intellectuals' Day. On this day in 1971, at the moment of victory, the Pakistani occupation forces abducted and killed the prominent journalists, intellectuals, professors, scientists and civil society figures of Bangladesh. In 1971, we lost these eminent people of the nation.”
"We, on behalf of the [Bangladesh Nationalist Party], Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, have all paid our tributes today. And we seek mercy for the souls of the martyred intellectuals."
The BNP secretary general said, “On this day, we have taken an oath to build an independent, democratic and prosperous Bangladesh for the same reason that the people of Bangladesh fought in 1971. This happened through the declaration of the Liberation War by martyred President Ziaur Rahman.”
Stating that a new opportunity had been created by the defeat of the fascist forces on Jul 36 or Aug 5, he said: “By making full use of this opportunity, we want to establish a Bangladesh that is a democratic and modern state free of discrimination.”
