Islamist party Khelafat Majlis has announced an 11-day programme, including a mass procession in Dhaka, to demand a legal framework for the July Uprising as part of a 5-point agenda.

The plans were outlined in a statement signed by party chief Maulana Mamunul Haque and Secretary General Maulana Jalaluddin on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the activities will begin with mass outreach across the country from Oct 1-9, followed by a mass procession in Dhaka on Oct 10, and submission of memorandums to deputy commissioners across the country on Oct 12.

“The July Charter and the 5-point demand are not just the programme of the Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, but a life-long demand of every citizen, regardless of party, ideological or religious affiliations. This is the only way to ensure freedom, sovereignty, Islamic values and the security of the people's fundamental rights.”

The statement also warned the authorities not to dismiss public demands or compromise national interests under foreign pressure.

“We want to say, don’t ignore people’s demands. Do not bow down to international conspiracies and sacrifice national interests, pushing the country into the depths of uncertainty. People have lost their patience. We are warning you -- there is no more scope for trickery or delay.”

The party added that a more “stringent programme” would be announced if the demands were not met.
