Meghmallar Bosu, education and research secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra Union's central committee, has resigned from the organisation.
Bosu told bdnews24.com on Saturday that Main Ahmed, the organisation's vice-president, had also stepped down alongside him.
"We have joined the [Network for People's Action]. It is not appropriate to remain on the policy-making forums of two organisations at the same time.”
“So we have resigned from the Chhatra Union. We now want to work in the NPA." Bosu said.
Formed by youth activists involved in the July Uprising, the NPA is a newly launched political platform “aiming to advance democratic transformation and social justice”.
The Chhatra Union confirmed in a statement that the central committee had accepted the resignation letters submitted by Bosu and Main.
It said their involvement with a new political platform could create organisational differences and a conflict of interest if they continued to hold policy-making positions in both organisations.
The central committee accepted their resignations after reviewing their reasons and political position.
For the same reason, the organisation also relieved central committee vice-president Nazifa Jannat of her responsibilities.
The Chhatra Union said the decisions were taken to uphold the organisation's principles and organisational transparency, adding that holding policy-making positions in multiple political organisations runs contrary to its constitution and policies.
It thanked the departing leaders for their contributions and wished them success in their future political and personal lives.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to the right to education, secularism, democracy, anti-imperialist struggles and the goal of building an egalitarian socialist Bangladesh.
Bosu previously served as convenor of the Dhaka University unit of the Chhatra Union and most recently contested in the central students' union (DUCSU) election for general secretary.
