Jamaat-e-Islami has announced its candidate for the upcoming Bogura-6 by-election, a day after BNP named its contender for the seat.

Bogura city Jamaat chief Abidur Rahman Shohel has been picked to contest the polls, party leaders confirmed on Friday morning.

The by-election was prompted after BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman vacated the seat having won two constituencies in the parliamentary polls held on Feb 12.

Shohel was the runner-up in the Bogura seat.

Abdus Salam Tuhin, the youth and sports secretary of Bogura city Jamaat, said: "We will collect the nomination papers on Saturday morning."

The BNP has nominated Bogura district unit president Rezaul Karim Badsha to defend the seat.

According to the Election Commission’s schedule for the by-election, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is Mar 2, Mar 5 for scrutiny, and Mar 14 for withdrawal of candidature.

Electoral symbols will be allocated on Mar 15, with voting taking place on Apr 9.
