Jamaat MP accuses govt of move to scrap referendum ordinance

Milon has underscored the need for the parliament to function as the true centre for resolving national crises

MP Saiful Alam Khan Milon, a member of the Central Executive Council of Jamaat-e-Islami, has accused the government of making an effort to repeal the ordinance related to the national referendum held alongside the general election on Feb 12.

The senior leader made the remarks at a press briefing on Friday following a meeting with a delegation from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) at the party’s central office.

“The government is moving to cancel the referendum ordinance instead of taking the expected steps to implement the ‘July Charter’,” Milon said.

He described the failure to execute the charter as the most significant challenge facing the current parliament.

During the exchange with IFES, both sides emphasised the need to make the electoral system more effective and robust.

They agreed on the importance of collectively strengthening constitutional and democratic institutions to ensure long-term sustainability.

Milon also underscored the need for the parliament to function as the true centre for resolving national crises.

"The parliament formed after the July movement must meet public expectations, where both the government and the opposition play equally significant roles," he said.
