Former attorney general AJ Mohammad Ali, who also served as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and headed the pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, has died in hospital care in Singapore.
The veteran lawyer passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital at 2:15pm Bangladesh standard time on Thursday, said Kayser Kamal, secretary general of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum.
The decision on bringing back the body will be made in consultation with the family, said Kayser.
Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan expressed “deep sorrow” over Ali’s demise and extended sympathy to his family.
Ali, a member of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Advisory Council, served as the top legal officer of the state from 2005 to 2007.
His father MH Khandaker was the first attorney general of Bangladesh.
Ali enrolled as a High Court lawyer in 1980. He worked as an additional attorney general before his promotion to attorney general.
He was part of Khaleda's defence team in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
