A woman has died after a tiger entered a village and dragged her from her home in India's Madhya Pradesh state.
The incident occurred in a village under the Khapa range of Kanha National Park in the early hours of Sunday, triggering panic among local residents, India Today reported.
According to local authorities, Sugni Bai Dhurve, a woman in her thirties, was sleeping in a hut when the tiger entered around 1:30am. It bit her on the head and dragged her about 300m from the house.
Upon hearing her family’s screams, villagers rushed to the scene with torches. The tiger reportedly fled into the forest, leaving the woman behind.
She was taken to a hospital in Baihar in critical condition but later died from severe head injuries.
An official from the Sizhora Buffer Zone of Kanha National Park said an investigation was under way, while police had registered a case of unnatural death.
According to the forest department, tigers and leopards have entered the area multiple times in recent months.
Officials said the victim’s family would receive compensation in accordance with government regulations.
The department has increased patrols and installed a cage in the area. Residents have also been advised to keep their doors closed at night and avoid entering nearby forests unnecessarily.
Local representatives said the family lived in a hut without a door and had not benefited from government housing schemes aimed at vulnerable tribal communities.
