Khushi Kabir, the renowned activist and convenor of Nijera Kori, has expressed her deepest condolences over the sudden demise of Toufique Imrose Khalidi, the editor-in-chief of bdnews24.com.

Khalidi’s untimely and premature death shocked everyone greatly, Khushi said in a message. “The large number of eulogies and obituaries that was shared on mainstream and social media was immense. His impact and presence not only among his peers and colleagues in the journalistic world but amongst such a large and varied section of people made me realise what a phenomenon he was,” she said.

The Nijera Kori convenor said Khalidi nurtured a personality which was impressive and his presence could never be overlooked or ignored.

“Extremely bright and confident to the point of being considered cocky, where some would consider his confidence and intelligence as having a superior attitude,” she continued.

“Something I realised only while reading one of the many reminiscences about him on social media, stating that he was different in real life and quite the opposite. I was surprised to read it. I found him intelligent and confident, yes, but not supercilious. He was warm, caring and a great host. Both as a host while interviewing and a great host while entertaining, something he loved doing.”

“He had reason to be confident. After years as a successful journalist both at home and abroad, he came back to begin a new track in journalism for Bangladesh. He started his online news agency: bdnews24.com, through which he introduced digital journalism in Bangladesh. He quickly gained traction and very shortly became the go-to site for verifying and getting news.”

Khushi said that Khalidi’s insistence on the objective handling of sensitive news and views meant that he would have to face immense pressure.

“Something he had to face and deal with and balance without compromising standards. It was not easy.”

She expressed sincere condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and associates of Khalidi.

“His untimely and premature passing has left a void deep that is irreplaceable. The nation needed someone like him at this juncture more than ever. His smart, intelligent and warm personality will be missed greatly. Rest in Power Toufique! We will try to uphold your spirit on your behalf as best we can!”
