Mahendra Singh Dhoni is back in the spotlight. But this time, it's not his cricket that's drawing attention.
The former India captain may soon be adding another title to his storied career: action hero.
A teaser released this week, titled “The Chase”, features Dhoni alongside Bollywood actor R Madhavan, igniting speculation about whether the cricketer is preparing for his first major role in Indian cinema, according to Indian news platform the Hindustan Times.
In the minute-long clip, unveiled by the production house Lucifer Circus, Dhoni and Madhavan appear in tactical gear—black uniforms, dark sunglasses, rifles slung across their shoulders—moving with the studied intensity of elite operatives on the verge of a dangerous mission.
The production company teased the project with the promise of a “blockbuster” directed by Vasan Bala, known for films such as Alia Bhatt starrer “Jigra,” and “Monica, O My Darling”.
Social media tags accompanying the release pointed to Dhoni’s “Bollywood debut,” a detail that quickly fuelled online chatter.
For fans, the teaser was more than just a promotional stunt.

It triggered a wave of speculation across platforms, with some convinced “The Chase” heralds Dhoni’s entry into mainstream acting, while others wondered whether the project might turn out to be a commercial campaign or limited-series experiment.
“From Captain Cool to action hero -- Thala never fails to surprise us,” one fan wrote on X, echoing the sentiment of many.
Though Dhoni has appeared in advertising campaigns and even made a cameo in a Tamil film, this project appears to mark his most ambitious foray into the world of film and entertainment.
The buzz underscores the enduring magnetism of the 43-year-old cricketer, who retired from international cricket in 2020 but continues to command an ardent following.
He last played in the Indian Premier League in May 2025.
Madhavan, who shares screen space with Dhoni in the teaser, has his own packed calendar.
After his recent turn in Dharma Productions’ Netflix release “Aap Jaisa Koi”, the actor is preparing for “Dhurandar”, a star-heavy venture that includes Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna and Arjun Rampal, scheduled to open in December.
As for “The Chase”, the producers have yet to clarify whether audiences should expect a feature film, streaming series, or something more unconventional.
