Bollywood singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing, saying he will not take on any new assignments in films.
The popular vocalist made the announcement in a Facebook post on Tuesday, thanking listeners for the support he has received over the years.
“Hello, Happy new year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners,” Arijit wrote.
“I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”
Over the past decade, Arijit has become one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Hindi cinema, according to the Times of India.
The 38-year old Bengali singer-composer, from Jiaganj, around 226 km away from Kolkata, in India's West Bengal state, made his Bollywood playback debut with the song Raabta from Agent Vinod in 2012.
He began his musical career as a contestant on the reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005.
His breakthrough came a year later with Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2, which established him as a leading voice for romantic songs in Hindi films.
Arijit has since delivered numerous hit songs, spanning romantic tracks and emotional ballads, reports TOI.
His popular numbers include Channa Mereya, Agar Tum Saath Ho, Gerua, Zaalima, Kesariya, Phir Le Aaya Dil, Khairiyat and Mast Magan.
Between 2020 and 2024, his music topped Spotify streams among all Indian artists, living or dead. On at least two occasions since August 2023, he even knocked Taylor Swift off the platform’s number-one ranking — if only for a day.
Known for maintaining a low public profile, Arijit leads a private life with his wife Koel Roy and their children, staying away from the spotlight outside his music.
