Justin Trudeau left office more than a year ago, but the internet will not let him retire quietly.
This week he turned up bouncing across millions of feeds in a TikTok promo for girlfriend Katy Perry's new single, and the clip has since split opinion between adoring and merciless.
The 15-second video, posted on Thursday, shows Perry dancing with her crew during a stop on her European tour in Germany’s Stuttgart before Trudeau hops briefly into frame. The 54-year-old is one of several people seen jumping across the screen while Perry sings in the foreground, and it's part of a series of similar promotional clips she has been rolling out since late June.

Perry leaned into the absurdity of it all in her caption, joking that ancient texts promise 1,000 years of good luck to anyone who hops along to the song -- a tongue-in-cheek nod to the single, "Watch It Burn”.
Reaction has been split down predictable lines.
TMZ called Trudeau's turn a "dancing debut" and described it as sweet, while other corners of the internet were far less forgiving.
Podcast host Mario Nawfal quipped that Trudeau had gone "from running a G7 country to B-roll”, and former Concordia University professor Gad Saad went further, calling his decade in power a lasting embarrassment for Canada.
The pile-on has not been limited to Trudeau critics.
Right-wing accounts reacted with particular intensity -- one self-described "America First" commentator branded the couple "a pair of idiots" in a post on X, prompting pushback from users who accused MAGA supporters of being unable to stomach seeing Trudeau happy.
Fans on TikTok were considerably warmer, with commenters gushing over how smitten Trudeau looked and joking about his new career as backup dancer.
On Reddit, the tone stayed mostly affectionate, with users joking Trudeau had entered his relaxed "himbo" phase.
The couple were first seen together on a Montreal dinner date in 2025, months after Perry's split from longtime partner Orlando Bloom, with whom she shares a daughter.
Since then they have been photographed at Coachella, made their red-carpet debut together at the Tribeca premiere of Perry's concert film, and Trudeau turned up at a FIFA World Cup match where Perry performed pre-game.
Perry has since described him, in a Tribeca Q&A, as the love of her life.
Trudeau himself addressed the shift in lifestyle during Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa last week, telling CBC's Adrienne Arsenault he was doing well.
He said being prime minister had cramped his style, and that he could now finally enjoy the day rather than rushing between events.
