October’s film calendar is packed with new releases across genres, from psychological thrillers and horror to romantic dramas, action films and documentaries, BBC reports.

The BBC’s list includes 12 films spanning horror, romance, fantasy, historical drama, action and documentaries, with several major releases arriving in cinemas this month.

Leading the selection is “Digger”, in which Cruise plays an eccentric oil billionaire whose company causes a climate-related catastrophe. The report describes the film as a sharp departure from the actor’s recent action-heavy roles.

Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” is also getting a new big-screen adaptation, directed by Georgia Oakley and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles. The BBC notes that the film brings a more atmospheric take on the classic novel.

Anne Hathaway stars in “Verity”, playing a bestselling author left comatose after a car accident. According to the BBC, the film takes a darker and more gothic approach than other recent adaptations of Hoover’s novels.

For horror fans, the BBC has singled out “Other Mommy”, which stars Jessica Chastain as both a mother and her daughter’s disturbing supernatural double. The film comes from director Rob Savage and producer James Wan.

“The Social Reckoning”, a follow-up of sorts to “The Social Network”, focuses on former Facebook employee Frances Haugen and the internal documents she leaked about the harms of social media. The report highlights Mikey Madison in the lead role and Jeremy Strong as a new take on the Zuckerberg character.

Olivia Colman and Peter Dinklage star in “Wicker”, a bawdy fantasy about a fisherwoman who pays a basket-maker to create a husband from twigs. The BBC calls the film an unusual fairy tale featuring Colman in a central role.

“Fjord”, this year’s Palme d’Or winner at Cannes, follows a Romanian-Norwegian couple whose family faces suspicion after moving to a remote Norwegian village. The BBC describes Cristian Mungiu’s film as a provocative drama about faith, politics and social divisions.

Other October releases include Korean director Lee Chang-dong’s “Possible Love”, the Everest adventure “Tenzing” and a new big-screen version of the video game “Street Fighter”.

The BBC also recommends “La Bola Negra”, a period drama exploring erased queer history in Spain, and Alex Gibney’s four-hour documentary “Musk”, which examines Elon Musk’s rise from Silicon Valley entrepreneur to one of the world’s most powerful and controversial billionaires.

Several of the films will be released internationally this month, although dates vary by country, while “Possible Love” is scheduled to reach Netflix in November.
