The government is considering reducing the number of subjects in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations from 2027.
Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon discussed the proposal with the chairmen of all education boards at a meeting on Wednesday.
However, no final decision has been taken, said Prof Khandokar Ehsanul Kabir, president of the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee and chairman of the Dhaka Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board.
Speaking to bdnews24.com on Wednesday afternoon, he said: “Once it is finalised, the minister will brief, and the ministry will also make an official announcement.”
Barishal Education Board Chairman Yunus Ali Siddiqui said a committee would be formed to examine the issue.
Neither of the education board chiefs, however, commented on the reasons behind the proposed reduction in subjects.
Prof Ehsanul Kabir said the meeting also discussed whether SSC and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations across all boards could be held with a uniform set of questions, though no decision was reached.
He also dismissed reports in some media outlets claiming that the 2027 SSC examinations would be held in December, calling them “misleading”.
He added that the education ministry would formally inform the public on all related matters.
Currently, SSC candidates sit for examinations in 10 subjects across 12 papers, including optional subjects by group, as well as Bangla and English first and second papers.
