Dr Sabrina Moriom Elias, an associate professor of life sciences at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), has been featured in a prestigious regional publication titled Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Advancing SDGs in Asia.
The publication was launched on May 28, during the 4th AASSA Symposium and the 58th KAST International Symposium in Seoul, Republic of Korea, according to a media statement.
Published by the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA), it recognises women scientists and STEM leaders whose work contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Dr Elias is featured under SDG 4: Quality Education, with her profile appearing on pages 18 and 19.
As per the statement, the publication includes 49 women scientists and STEM leaders from across Asia, including four representatives from Bangladesh.
Alongside Dr Elias, the publication features Dr Aliya Naheed of icddr,b, Dr Sharmin Sultana of Jahangirnagar University, and Dr Kamrun Nahar of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.
The publication was developed under the AASSA Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) initiative, which aims to highlight the contributions of women in STEM across Asia, the statement said.
Dr Elias was selected for her work in interdisciplinary genomics research combining molecular biology and bioinformatics, as well as her contributions to scientific capacity building through classroom teaching, research mentorship, outreach activities and training programmes for early-career researchers.
Her work focuses on plant genomics, microbial systems and STEM education, with applications across agriculture, environment and biotechnology.
The press note said she has also contributed to student engagement in advanced research and emerging scientific tools through supervised research and mentorship activities supported by national and international research initiatives.
Selection for the publication was based on nominations submitted through national science academies.
Dr Elias was nominated by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) and selected by AASSA through its review process.
According to AASSA, the publication highlights women scientists and STEM leaders whose work contributes to research, education, innovation and capacity building aligned with the SDGs.
