At least 50 candidates have warned that the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) elections would be “questionable and farcical” if held under the current conditions.

They cited an unstable campus environment, the “complete shutdown” of classes and exams, and students leaving the halls ahead of the upcoming puja holidays as barriers to credible polls.

The remarks came at a press conference on Monday at the university’s Paribahan Market premises, organised by four panels -- “Sachetan Shikkharthi Sangsad”, “RUCSU for Radical Change”, “Sarbajanin Shikkharthi Sangsad”, and “United for Rights” -- along with several independent candidates.

The candidates called for an urgent resolution to the “dependent quota” issue to ensure that the elections are participatory.

They demanded a level playing field, quick action from the RUCSU Election Commissioner given the shutdown and the puja holidays, and steps to stabilise the campus environment before the election is held.
