Jahangirnagar University authorities have suspended a student from the Department of Geography and Environment over a social media post deemed derogatory to the Islamic Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and formed an investigation committee to look into the matter.

The suspension of Tawfiq Islam Nabil, a student of the 50th batch from the Academic Year 2020–21, was announced in a notice posted on the university’s official Facebook page on Monday.

According to the notice, Nabil was suspended for allegedly violating Section 295(A) of the Penal Code for hurting religious sentiments through a Facebook post about the prophet, and also breaching Section 4(1)(b) of the JU Student Discipline Ordinance 2018.

The action was approved by Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan.

Alongside the suspension, the university formed a probe committee led by Prof Shamsul Alam, acting dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, under the same section of the disciplinary ordinance.

Efforts to reach Nabil by phone for comment were unsuccessful.

On Saturday, a screenshot of a Facebook comment allegedly made by Nabil began circulating widely on the platform. As it gained attention, it sparked a wave of outrage among students across campus.

Later that night, angry students took out a protest march demanding disciplinary action against Nabil.

On Sunday, a group of students formally submitted a written complaint to the VC, calling for a speedy investigation and Nabil’s permanent expulsion to preserve the university’s “peaceful and tolerant environment”.
