The Dhaka University authorities have condemned the comments of Shamim Ahsan, assistant secretary of Barguna District Jamaat-e-Islami, who said the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) used to be a “drug den and brothel”.

In a statement on Sunday, university authorities protested Shamim’s comments, describing it as “obscene, indecent, and outdated”.

“His statement has severely damaged the image, reputation, tradition, and honour of Dhaka University.

“The university authorities demand the immediate withdrawal of this statement. The university administration requests everyone to refrain from making such outrageous statements.”

Earlier on Saturday, at an election rally of Jamaat-nominated candidate Sultan Ahmed for Barguna-2 constituency in Barguna’s Pathorghata Upazila, Shamim said: “After the [students’] elections, the Islamic Chhatra Shibir has transformed the DUCSU, which used to be a drug den and brothel.

“Therefore, Jamaat-e-Islami is capable of uprooting all kinds of injustice, extortion, and corruption from Bangladesh.”
