Jahangirnagar University has temporarily suspended 16 students from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology over alleged ragging incidents.
A notice signed by Md Mohiuddin, acting director of the university’s Public Relations Office, said some senior students reportedly ragged junior students in Hall No. 21, which followed directives from Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan for the action.
Ragging in universities is a form of bullying and harassment, often involving senior students intimidating or humiliating juniors through physical or verbal abuse in the guise of initiation.
A three-strong investigation committee has been formed and asked to submit a report with recommendations within 21 working days.
The temporarily suspended students of the 53rd batch are: Md Tanvir Rahman Mun, Md Abdullah Al Fahad, Abdullah Al Saeed, Md Abu Talha Roni, Rajib Sheikh, SM Mahamudun Nabi, Md. Abu Said, Jannatul Adon, Ahmed Arefin Ratul, Tasnimul Hasan Zubair, Md Mahamudul Hasan Fuad, Md Al Hasib, Md Abdullah Al Noman, Md Rakibul Hasan Nibir, Md Zahidul Islam, and Ushant Tripura.
The alleged ragging took place around 11:30pm on Sunday in Room 403 of Hall No. 21, which is formerly Sheikh Russel Hall.
Victims and witnesses said junior students were first called to Shaheed Rafiq-Jabbar Hall courtyard, then taken to Room 403, where lights were turned off and they were made to stand in darkness for nearly 20 minutes while being questioned about hall rules and discipline.
Hall No. 21 Provost Professor Borhan Uddin said, “We caught them red-handed with hall council representatives, some students, and staff. This is clearly against university discipline. We will review details and recommend the maximum penalty as per university regulations.”
The suspects, however, denied the allegations, claiming juniors were invited for orientation discussions, lights were off due to the heat, and doors and windows were closed to avoid disturbing nearby exam-takers.
