The students at Rajshahi University are staging a sit-in protest with a three-point list of demands, including the scrapping of the dependent quota.
They locked the Syed Nazrul Islam Administration Building at 10am on Thursday, said Md Akhter Hossain Majumdar, administrator of the Public Relations office.
Earlier, Rajshahi University had a 5 percent dependent quota fixed for the first-year undergraduate admissions, but that quota for the children of teachers and employees was scrapped for the 2024-2025 academic year per the authorities’ decision.
The admission committee took the decision at an emergency meeting on Wednesday.
The university revised the quota for the admission of the children of teachers and employees for undergraduate admissions in 2024-2025, Rajshahi University said in a press statement.
Only a 1 percent quota would be maintained for the admission of children of the university support staff and general employees, the statement said.
However, the students have continued to push for all forms of quotas to be scrapped.
“Dependent quota means that those ineligible will get an opportunity. It’s harmful for the nation. Even then, if they want a dependent quota, that should be available to the children of all poor people in the country,” said Ammar, a Rajshahi University coordinator of Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
More than a hundred students of different departments are taking part in the sit-in protest.
The other demands of the students are to bring the “fascist” teachers, students and staff members to trial and for the vice chancellor and registrar to face students in an open space and to explain why two “fascist” teachers had been appointed as assistant proctors.
