Meghmallar Basu, the Pratirodh Panel's general secretary candidate in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections, has been admitted to hospital in the middle of campaigning.
On Tuesday, Meghmallar, also president of a Dhaka University Students’ Union faction, said that he required urgent surgery for appendicitis.
In a Facebook post, he wrote: “What I feared has come true. My body has betrayed me. Appendicitis surgery tonight. I don’t think I’ll be able to campaign in person anymore. It’s a simple operation, but the doctor is refusing to delay it. The condition has apparently worsened quite a bit.”
Meghmallar also sought prayers and blessings from both “political friends and foes”.
The left-leaning Pratirodh Parishad panel has nominated Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi as its vice president (VP) candidate. Emi previously served as vice president of Shamsunnahar Hall in the last DUCSU elections, running as an independent.
The coalition includes one faction each of the Bangladesh Students’ Union and Socialist Students’ Front, as well as Revolutionary Student Unity, Student Council, Students’ and Youth Movement, Hill Students’ Council, and Democratic Student Platform.
Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared Basu’s post on Facebook, writing: “Get well soon, brother. I hope you recover quickly.”
Others also wished him a speedy recovery in the comments, including NCP leaders Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, and SM Farhad, the general secretary candidate of the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed Oikyaboddho Shikkharthi Jote in the DUCSU polls.
