Shibir celebrates ‘victory’ before full results

Leaders and activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir have held a victory procession amid news that their organisation's candidates are out to a massive early lead in the top positions of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) elections.

A procession set off from Teacher-Student Centre at 2:45am on Tuesday while another was also held in Shahbagh.

As of 3am, the candidates backed by Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing led their opponents by a massive margin in the polls.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal vice president candidate Abidul Islam Khan rejected the results as soon as they were announced.

In a post on his Facebook page around 2:30am on Wednesday, Abid wrote: “I guessed the pre-planned rigging of these results just after noon. Use whatever numbers you like. I reject this planned farce.”

On Tuesday night, he had made allegations of voting fraud in the polls. “The boxes of ballots that were alleged to be empty were later seen to be full during counting. The fraud in this election surpasses even [Sheikh] Hasina’s.”

However, Sheikh Tanvir Baree Hamim, the general secretary candidate for the Chhatra Dal-backed panel, said he would accept the verdict of the students. In a post at 2:15pm on his personal Facebook page, he wrote: “If this is what Dhaka University students feel – even if this is their verdict, then I respect their verdict. I am waiting for the activities of the students.

“Though voting continued in a festive atmosphere from the morning to late in the afternoon, irregularities were noted at several centres. Specifically, technical glitches, forgery, and fraud were observed.”

Students were able to cast their ballots in the DUCSU polls from 8am to 4pm on Tuesday at 810 voting booths in eight polling centres on campus. Four panels brought duelling allegations of code of conduct violations while polls were open.

Chhatra Dal also protested against the election authority for an alleged instance in which “pre-filled” ballots in favour of the Chhatra Shibir-backed panel were found.

There were also reports of Chhatra Dal protests in front of the Dhaka University Club over the alleged stuffing of ballots overnight.

Reports also came in of people gathering at the university entrances during the vote counting, but the identities of those present could not be confirmed.

The Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir-backed candidates alleged that they were leaders and activists of their opposing political parties.

Chhatra Dal VP candidate Abidul alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists had taken up “combat positions” in Nilkhet, Shahbagh and Chankharpul.

Shibir panel general secretary candidate SM Farhad alleged that Jubo Dal and BNP leaders and activists had taken up positions patrolling nine points near the campus.
