A total of 429 students have submitted nomination papers for the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) elections, while 502 have filed nominations for the hall union polls.

The deadline for submission ended at 8pm on Thursday, confirmed Ariful Haque Siddique, secretary of the Election Commission.

According to the commission, 529 nomination papers were collected for the CUCSU polls, of which 429 were submitted. For the hall union elections, 635 forms were collected, with 502 turned in.

The last day to collect nomination forms was Tuesday, while Wednesday was the initial deadline for submission.

On Wednesday morning, the university Chhatra Dal’s General Secretary Abdullah Al Noman appealed to extend the deadline for two days. In response, the commission held an emergency meeting and extended both the collection and submission deadlines by a day.

Collection continued until Wednesday afternoon, and the submission deadline was set for Thursday evening.

By the end of submission, nominations were filed across student halls as follows: 38 in AF Rahman Hall, 33 in Alaol Hall, 38 in Atish Dipangkar Srigyan Hall, 43 in Shah Amanat Hall, 31 in Shaheed Abdur Rab Hall, 47 in Shaheed Farhad Hossain Hall, 36 in Shahjalal Hall, 53 in Suhrawardy Hall, 37 in Masterda Suriya Sen Hall, and 21 in Artist Rashid Chowdhury Hostel.

Among female halls: Bijoy-24 Hall had 29 nominations, Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia Hall 31, Nawab Faizunnesa Hall 17, Pritilata Hall 26, and Shamsun Nahar Hall 22.

Ariful told reporters that although scrutiny of nomination papers was scheduled for Thursday, it will now be held on Sunday, with the preliminary list of candidates to be published on Monday.

As per the election schedule, the final list will be announced on Sept 25. Candidates may withdraw on Sept 23, while objections with candidacies will be settled on Sept 24.
